| It was believed that William Duke (d. 1775) was the son of James Duke and Mary Byrd, but a DNA study indicates that my Duke line shares common ancestry with John Duke, a 17th century settler of Isle of Wight County, Virginia. |
| William Duke, Jr., married Mary Green, a daughter of Edward Green of Brunswick County. The Duke and Green families moved from Virginia to North Carolina between 1742 and 1750. William Duke, Jr., became a wealthy and influential man in the County of Granville, which became Bute County in 1764 and finally Warren. |
