William Byrd (1652-1704) was
born in England, and he came to Virginia as a young man and married Mary
Horsmanden Filmer, a widow. Upon his death, the extensive lands he owned in
Charles City County were devised to his son Col. William Byrd. He left £300 to
his daughter Mary, and also named daughters Susan and Ursula.
No proof exists that the first William Duke listed above was the son of James
Duke and Mary Byrd, but the available evidence strongly suggests it.
